Coach in the moment

Turn the everyday debrief into a useful learning habit.

A practical approach

A short, focused debrief can surface important patterns without turning the end of a day into a reporting exercise. Ask what people understood, what they questioned and where a team member needed more support. Keep the discussion specific.

Choose one conversation to examine for its decisions rather than its result alone. Consider how the introduction was framed, whether the person had space to respond and how uncertainty was handled. This makes coaching useful even when circumstances differ.

Close with a manageable practice goal for the next session. The manager owns the follow-through: checking whether guidance helped, removing obstacles and making sure learning reaches colleagues who were not present.

Bring it into the brief

Agree who owns the decision, how the team will practise it and when learning will be reviewed. A clear responsibility keeps a useful idea connected to everyday work.
